Backyard Shed Transformation in Annapolis

· ·

This project was for a client in Annapolis with a backyard straight out of a storybook. Walls of ivy, borders of pink hydrangeas, and a quaint white shed tucked behind a line of boxwoods. You would never guess you were standing in the heart of the city.

But like most sheds, this one had quietly become the catch-all for every piece of outdoor stuff the family owned. Boating gear, outdoor games, gardening supplies, tools, and a collection of old containers were packed inside with no real system. Finding anything meant digging, and reaching the back of the shed was nearly impossible.

The Approach

We tackled this one in clear phases, and the first was all about getting a true picture of what we were working with.

Phase one was the big empty-out. Our team pulled everything out of the shed and sorted it into groupings of like items. This step did double duty. It gave our client a clear view of how many duplicates she had in each category, making the editing process much easier. It also helped our organizers figure out exactly what size and how many bins the space would need.

Once the editing was done, our team stepped back so the shed itself could get some love. The next day, painters and power washers arrived to clean out every nook and cranny and coat the interior in fresh white. We gave it a full week to dry before our handywoman came in to install the hardworking pieces: a fishing rod organizer, a slat wall, and industrial-sized hooks for the client’s beloved maypole.

Then came the fun part. Our team of two returned to bring it all together. We built white shelving systems on rollers, so the whole setup can be rearranged or rolled aside for easy cleaning. Fishing poles, the maypole, and garden tools found their place on the slat wall and pegboard. Sports equipment was moved to a deck box at the back, oyster supplies were placed in an Ikea shelf unit, and vases, pots, gardening supplies, and tools were all binned and set on the rolling racks. By the end, everything had a home and a clearly defined zone.

What Made This Project Unique

A few details set this one apart. The client’s collection said everything about life on the Chesapeake: fishing poles, oyster supplies, and yes, a beloved maypole. Giving each of these their own dedicated spot, whether on the slat wall, the pegboard, or those industrial hooks, meant the most-used (and most-loved) items were always within easy reach.

The all-white palette was the other star. A shed takes a beating from dust, dirt, and the occasional spider web, so we built the storage on rollers. Now our client can pull the shelving out, give the space a quick clean, and roll everything right back into place. To keep that crisp, cohesive look going, we used clear multipurpose bins from The Container Store throughout. The real MVP, though, was a set of recycling bins that fit perfectly on the shelves, offered plenty of open storage, and kept our white-on-white theme intact. (Sometimes the best organizing product is the one you would never expect.)

Now our clients don’t have to deal with a shed that is a chaotic catch-all, but rather a calm retreat that supports their hobbies. We love how this one turned out!
