5 Tips for Creating a Super Functional Mudroom for Back to School

The mudroom is a key space in many homes, especially during the busy back-to-school season. It’s where the chaos of the day can be organized, making mornings smoother and afternoons less stressful. Here are five tips to create a super functional mudroom that will keep things organized and make your life easier.

1. Add Doors to Conceal Clutter

If you have the option, installing doors to your mudroom storage areas can make a world of difference. Doors help keep the mudroom looking neat and tidy, even if the inside is a bit chaotic. Whether it’s sliding doors, bi-fold doors, or traditional cabinet doors, they can hide shoes, coats, backpacks, and other items, giving the space a cleaner and more streamlined appearance.

If you don’t have a formal mudroom, converting your front hall closet into one is a great option – keep the doors!

Tip: Choose doors with magnetic or soft-close mechanisms to ensure they stay closed and are safe for little fingers.

2. Install Lower Hooks for Easy Access

Children are more likely to hang up their coats and backpacks if they can easily reach the hooks. Installing lower hooks at kid-friendly heights encourages them to take responsibility for their belongings. This simple addition can help reduce the amount of clutter that accumulates on the floor. There’s nothing worse than tripping over shoes and backpacks when you get home from a long day at work!

Tip: Use sturdy, decorative hooks that can handle the weight of heavy backpacks and coats.

3. Create Designated Zones for Each Family Member

Assigning a specific area for each family member can help keep the mudroom organized. Personalized cubbies, bins, or baskets can store individual items, making it easy to find what you need. Label each zone with names or photos to add a personal touch and ensure everyone knows where their items belong.

Tip: Include a space for each person’s bag, coat, shoes (and socks), and a bin for papers. See our School Keepsake Challenge for more on keeping the school paper’s organized all year long.

4. Incorporate Seating for Convenience

A bench or seating area in the mudroom is incredibly useful. It provides a place to sit while putting on or taking off shoes, which is especially helpful for younger children who need a bit more time to get ready. Under-seat storage can also be a great way to maximize space, keeping shoes and other items neatly tucked away.

Tip: Choose a bench with built-in storage, such as pull-out drawers or cubbies underneath. Cushions can add comfort and style to the seating area.

5. Use Bins and Baskets for Organization

Keeping small items like winter gloves or hats organized can be a challenge, but bins and baskets can make it much easier. Use labeled bins for shoes, sports equipment, and other accessories. Baskets on shelves can hold miscellaneous household items (like bug spray, sunscreen, pet items, etc.), while larger bins for shoes can be placed on the floor for easy access.

Tip: Clear bins are great for visibility, allowing you to quickly see what’s inside. For a more cohesive look, choose matching bins and baskets that complement your mudroom’s decor. (Just make sure they are open on top, no lids!)

A well-designed mudroom can be a game-changer during the busy back-to-school season. By incorporating these tips, you can create a space that is both functional and stylish. (Win-win!) This will help keep your home organized and make the transition back to school a little bit smoother for everyone.
